1st European Meeting for Young researchers on soil-transmitted

Helminths: “Host-helminth interactions from a Global Health Perspective”

23-26 March 2014

2 Billion people world-wide suffer from soil-transmitted helminth infections. Particularly affected are children in developing countries, where helminth infections contribute to the vicious circle of poverty. As helminths are potent immune-suppressors, they can cause impaired responsiveness to vaccines and fatal co-infections with e.g. HIV or malaria.

On the other hand, the immune-suppressive properties of helminths could be harnessed for the treatment of inflammatory diseases that are on the rise in developed countries. Our meeting will encompass immunomodulation, innate and adaptive immune responses as well as preventive and therapeutic strategies against soil-transmitted helminth infections.
